Pump Maintenance and Overhaul

This course is intended to meet the needs of personnel whose work involves the maintenance of pumps or an appreciation of pump principles and characteristics.

Content and Method:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

¨ Understand the two main categories of pump.

¨ Identify pumping definitions:-

  • Static Delivery Head
  • Total Static Head
  • Static Suction Lift
  • Static Suction Head

¨ Understand the principle of operation of positive displacement pumps by reference to:-

  • Reciprocating Pumps
  • Gear Type Pumps

¨ Understand the principle of operation of centrifugal pumps and how this is applied to:-

  • Single stage volute type pumps
  • Multi stage volute type pumps
  • Multi stage guide vane type pumps

¨ Identify the main components (including protective feature) of a modern boiler feed pump and their function.

¨ Understand in simple terms, "Cavitation" and explain its significance by reference to:-

  • Net positive suction head
  • Pump damage

¨ Identify the cause of the following defects and the actions to be taken to rectify those defects:-

  • Failure to deliver water
  • Pump will not prime
  • Failure to build up pressure
  • Insufficient Capacity
  • Pump loses water after starting
  • Pump vibrates
  • Pump overloads driving engine
  • Excessive noise
  • Pressure and Vacuum Reading
 

Who Will Benefit:

Existing or newly appointed staff who require pump skills training or require refresher training in this subject.
